Employment Services - Good News Story - Matt Boyd
Matt Boyd, a Gardener/Grounds Maintenance Apprentice, was successful in securing a full-time position with the Grounds Services team at Oakleaf Commercial Services.
Prior to becoming an apprentice with Oakleaf, Matt took part in an employability course delivered by Vestia Training. He was informed about the apprenticeship opportunity whilst on the course and decided to apply. Previously, Matt had done a series of factory, labouring and bar jobs but wanted to pursue a career in horticulture and gain the relevant qualifications. He was aware that this was a good opportunity to increase his skills and improve his profile.
We caught up with Matt to find out how he is getting on. Matt said: “I am really pleased that I decided to take part in the two year apprenticeship. I was a little worried at first that I may not be able to cope financially while earning apprenticeship wages, but was able to manage.
“While on the apprenticeship, I was able to build good skills and knowledge around horticulture including the correct use of equipment and maintaining them. I am aware of how to conduct myself with others in a professional manner and have a good idea of what my strengths and weaknesses are in the workplace. An added bonus is that I now have a NVQ Level 2 in Horticulture and have relevant spraying licenses that can be added to my record of achievement.”
