Building Better Opportunities – Good News Story – Conner Powell

The Big Lottery Fund is the largest funder of community activity in the UK. It puts people in the lead to improve their lives and communities, often through small local projects. Building Better Opportunities is a National Lottery and ESF funded project designed to tackle poverty and promote social inclusion throughout Worcestershire. This project is proud to tell you the story of Conner Powell.

Conner was referred to Building Better Opportunities by Axis Youth Hub as he was wanting to find a job, but seemed to be struggling with his confidence. Conner was very motivated so we started by exploring his skills and strengths, something which Conner found quite hard to talk about. He used these to develop his CV further so that employers could obtain a full picture of what he had to offer.

We explored his interests and looked at different roles that would relate to these, so that he was able to build a picture of his long-term goals. As building confidence was a big focus for Conner, we completed a confidence and self-awareness session which asked him to talk about his achievements and motivations. Conner is a quick learner and once he was shown the process of writing cover letters and how to tailor them to a specific job, he was well on his way, searching and applying for all suitable vacancies.

At second interview, Conner was offered a job as Kitchen Assistant at The Mercure in Bewdley. He was very pleased and excited to start this new role and be ‘a valuable member of society’. Conner has a passion for military history and hopes now that he is working, to become a member of a re-enactment group and hopes that maybe in the future he will find a role that can reflect his interest in history.

Conner enjoyed his time with Building Better Opportunities and said: “Refreshing my CV has made it more appealing and now contains all of my grades. I now have a cover letter template and know how to use the job description to amend it to apply for different roles. We talked about lots of different types of jobs that I hadn’t thought about before, which helped me identify the vacancies that I wanted to apply for. I would recommend Building Better Opportunities to other people that want help looking for work.”
