Building Better Opportunities - Good News Story - Gemma Carroll

The Big Lottery Fund is the largest funder of community activity in the UK. It puts people in the lead to improve their lives and communities, often through small local projects. Building Better Opportunities is a National Lottery and ESF funded project designed to tackle poverty and promote social inclusion throughout Worcestershire. This project is proud to tell you the story of Gemma Carroll.

Gemma had been an unemployed for a number of years when she was recommended BBO. She had been unsure about what she wanted to do and felt it was time to discuss her options with her BBO Jobs Coach, having spent many years dedicated to raising her family. Gemma expressed hopes that one day she could become a self-employed Level 3 Sports Massage Therapist but felt she was underqualified only holding a basic Level 2 massage qualification.

Gemma and her BBO Jobs Coach began to search for Level 3 Sports Massage courses, however, they struggled to find one locally which would also fit around her childcare commitments. After multiple enquiries, they finally found a course based in Leamington Spa. This initially worried Gemma as it was quite a distance and she didn’t have childcare in place for the days she would need to attend the course. However, this was the only course that would allow Gemma to become specialised in her chosen area. Through BBO’s financial support and robust vetting of local childcare providers, her Jobs Coach was able to help arrange a childminder for the duration of the course allowing her to attend 8 weeks intensive training.

Gemma successfully completed her qualification and now holds a Level 3 Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy.

Gemma said: “This course was something I have wanted to do for a long time and BBO gave me the support and motivation to finally do it!

“I plan to become a self-employed masseuse and maybe rent my own room in a salon or a gym. It’s great to see there are already exciting opportunities available locally that could be a potential business venture in the near future."
