Building Better Opportunities – Good News Story - Lisa Burford
The Big Lottery Fund is the largest funder of community activity in the UK. It puts people in the lead to improve their lives and communities, often through small local projects. Building Better Opportunities is a National Lottery and ESF funded project designed to tackle poverty and promote social inclusion throughout Worcestershire, this project is proud to tell you the story of Lisa Burford.
Lisa was referred to BBO by The Community Housing Group after suffering a substantial benefit cap, which meant Lisa needed to find employment as soon as possible.
Being a mother of five children, Lisa felt extremely overwhelmed with worry when she was informed of her changed circumstances and was desperate for help on how she could resolve this before she lost control of her finances.
She wasn’t only low on confidence but her anxiety was at an all-time high. Lisa didn’t know which way to turn and was unsure as to what work she could do having not worked for a number of years, apart from a short stint of self-employment.
After discussions about her aspirations, transferrable skills and availability, Lisa decided she would like to become a carer. She also drove and had access to her own transport meaning she could either work as a domiciliary carer or in a residential home.
Lisa wanted to immediately start job searching so began working with her BBO job coach on creating a quality CV and cover letter so that she could start using them to contact employers. She applied for multiple jobs before starting to receive interview offers and went to all her interviews and eventually accepted a job with Home Instead as a Domiciliary Carer. Lisa now provides care to people in their own homes, which has enabled Lisa to work her hours around her family which was also of great importance to her.
Lisa said: “I am really happy I have finally found a job, and a big thanks to my BBO job coach, Kirsty, for all her support.
“Next on my agenda is to find a bigger home for me and my family, which has also started to finally move in the right direction, so things are looking up!”
